Overview
Follistatin-344 is the longer, heparin-binding isoform of follistatin, a naturally occurring glycoprotein that directly binds and neutralizes myostatin, one of the most potent negative regulators of skeletal-muscle growth.
Mechanism & Research Findings
FST-344 binds myostatin (and related TGF-beta superfamily members like activin) with high affinity, preventing ligand-receptor engagement and thereby blocking the Smad2/3-mediated growth-inhibitory signal. Because it acts through direct ligand sequestration rather than receptor blockade (contrasting with ACE-031’s decoy-receptor mechanism), it is frequently studied comparatively to characterize differences between ligand-trap and receptor-trap approaches to myostatin-pathway inhibition.
Research Applications
- Myostatin ligand-sequestration research
- Comparative ligand-trap vs. receptor-trap pathway studies
- Skeletal-muscle growth-regulation research
