Overview
GHRP-6 was one of the first-generation growth hormone releasing peptides developed and remains a foundational reference compound in secretagogue research. It is frequently used as the benchmark against which newer, more selective GH secretagogues (like Ipamorelin) are measured.
Mechanism & Research Findings
Like GHRP-2, GHRP-6 binds the ghrelin receptor (GHS-R1a) to stimulate pulsatile GH release from the anterior pituitary. Original characterization studies from the 1980s–90s established its GH-releasing potency and also identified a pronounced appetite-stimulating effect mediated through hypothalamic ghrelin pathways, making it a common tool compound in orexigenic and energy-homeostasis research. Because it also modestly elevates cortisol and prolactin, GHRP-6 is often used in comparative receptor-selectivity studies alongside more selective analogs.
Research Applications
- Ghrelin/GHS-R1a receptor pharmacology
- Appetite and feeding-behavior models
- Growth hormone pulsatility studies
- Baseline reference compound for newer secretagogue comparisons
