Overview
LL-37 is the only cathelicidin-family antimicrobial peptide expressed in humans, released from neutrophils, epithelial cells, and macrophages as part of the innate immune system’s first line of defense.
Mechanism & Research Findings
LL-37 exerts broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity by directly disrupting bacterial cell membranes through an amphipathic, cationic alpha-helical structure that inserts into and permeabilizes lipid bilayers. Beyond direct antimicrobial action, it is studied for immunomodulatory roles including chemoattraction of immune cells, promotion of angiogenesis, and wound-healing signaling, making it a heavily referenced compound in both antimicrobial-peptide and innate-immunity research literature.
Research Applications
- Antimicrobial peptide / membrane-disruption mechanism research
- Innate immune-cell chemoattraction studies
- Wound-healing and angiogenesis-adjacent immune signaling
For laboratory research use only. Not for human consumption, diagnostic, or therapeutic use.
