Overview
Glutathione is the body’s principal endogenous antioxidant tripeptide, synthesized from glutamate, cysteine, and glycine, and studied across nearly every field of oxidative-stress and detoxification research.
Mechanism & Research Findings
Glutathione’s reduced form (GSH) neutralizes reactive oxygen species and regenerates other antioxidants (such as vitamins C and E) by donating electrons, cycling to its oxidized form (GSSG) in the process. It also serves as a critical cofactor for glutathione-S-transferase enzymes involved in Phase II hepatic detoxification. Cell-culture and animal research widely use glutathione status as a biomarker for oxidative stress, and it remains one of the most-studied molecules in redox biology, aging, and hepatoprotection research.
Research Applications
- Redox biology and oxidative-stress biomarker research
- Hepatic Phase II detoxification pathway studies
- Antioxidant regeneration cascade modeling
For laboratory research use only. Not for human consumption, diagnostic, or therapeutic use.
