Overview
MGF is a splice variant of the IGF-1 gene, distinct from the systemic liver-derived IGF-1Ea isoform, and is expressed locally in skeletal muscle specifically in response to mechanical stress or damage.
Mechanism & Research Findings
Because MGF is expressed locally at the site of muscle microtrauma rather than circulating systemically like hepatic IGF-1, it is studied as a first-responder signal that activates and expands the local satellite (muscle stem) cell pool before the systemic IGF-1Ea isoform drives subsequent protein-synthesis and hypertrophy phases. This distinct temporal and spatial role has made MGF a key compound in research examining the sequential, multi-isoform nature of the IGF-1 gene’s response to mechanical loading.
Research Applications
- Satellite (muscle stem) cell pool expansion research
- Local vs. systemic IGF-1 isoform signaling studies
- Mechanical-loading / exercise-induced gene-splicing research
For laboratory research use only. Not for human consumption, diagnostic, or therapeutic use.
