Overview
ACE-031 is an engineered soluble form of the activin receptor type IIB, developed as a decoy receptor to sequester myostatin and other negative regulators of muscle growth before they can bind their native membrane receptor.
Mechanism & Research Findings
By acting as a high-affinity “trap” for myostatin, GDF-11, and activin A, ACE-031 prevents these ligands from binding native ActRIIB receptors on muscle tissue, blocking the downstream Smad2/3 signaling cascade that normally restrains muscle growth. This mechanism has made it a key reference compound in myostatin-pathway research, particularly in models of muscle-wasting disease where restoring muscle mass via myostatin blockade is the primary research question.
Research Applications
- Myostatin/activin (Smad2/3) signaling-pathway research
- Muscle-wasting disease modeling
- Decoy-receptor / ligand-trap pharmacology research
