Overview
VIP is a naturally occurring neuropeptide with broad distribution across the gut, lung, and central nervous system, studied for its potent vasodilatory, immunomodulatory, and circadian-signaling activity.
Mechanism & Research Findings
VIP activates VPAC1/VPAC2 G-protein coupled receptors, triggering cAMP-mediated smooth-muscle relaxation (vasodilation and bronchodilation) and modulating cytokine release from immune cells toward an anti-inflammatory profile. Within the CNS, VIP is also studied as a key signaling molecule in the suprachiasmatic nucleus, where it helps synchronize circadian pacemaker neurons — making it a compound of interest across pulmonary, immunological, and chronobiology research programs.
Research Applications
- VPAC1/VPAC2 receptor and cAMP-signaling research
- Immune cytokine-modulation studies
- Circadian pacemaker / suprachiasmatic nucleus research
