Overview
Oxytocin is a well-characterized cyclic nonapeptide hormone produced in the hypothalamus, studied across reproductive physiology, social-behavior neuroscience, and cardiovascular research.
Mechanism & Research Findings
Oxytocin activates the oxytocin receptor (OXTR), a G-protein coupled receptor expressed in uterine smooth muscle, mammary tissue, and throughout the central nervous system, including the amygdala and nucleus accumbens. Beyond its classical roles in uterine contraction and milk-ejection reflex research, oxytocin is one of the most heavily studied peptides in social-bonding and trust-behavior neuroscience, with rodent and human research examining its role in pair-bonding, stress-buffering, and prosocial behavior circuits.
Research Applications
- OXTR receptor pharmacology
- Social-bonding and prosocial-behavior neuroscience
- Uterine/reproductive smooth-muscle research
For laboratory research use only. Not for human consumption, diagnostic, or therapeutic use.
