Overview
KPV is the smallest active fragment of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH), retaining the anti-inflammatory signaling of the parent hormone without its pigmentation or appetite-related receptor activity.
Mechanism & Research Findings
Unlike the melanocortin-receptor-mediated effects of full-length α-MSH, KPV’s anti-inflammatory activity in research models appears largely melanocortin-receptor-independent, with studies pointing to direct modulation of NF-κB signaling — a master regulator of the inflammatory cascade. This has made KPV a compound of interest in gut-inflammation and dermatological research models, including studies on colitis and inflammatory skin conditions, where researchers are specifically interested in anti-inflammatory activity without melanocortin-driven pigmentation effects.
Research Applications
- NF-κB pathway and inflammation signaling research
- Gut-barrier / colitis animal models
- Dermatological inflammation research
