Overview
Gonadorelin is a synthetic form of native gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), used as the gold-standard reference compound for direct GnRH receptor activation research at the pituitary level.
Mechanism & Research Findings
Gonadorelin binds GnRH receptors on pituitary gonadotroph cells, triggering pulsatile release of LH and FSH. Because it is structurally identical to native GnRH, it is used in research as the physiological benchmark for studying pulsatile versus continuous GnRH receptor stimulation — continuous exposure is well documented to eventually downregulate the receptor (a phenomenon exploited in different research contexts), making Gonadorelin central to studies of GnRH receptor desensitization kinetics.
Research Applications
- Direct GnRH receptor activation studies
- Pulsatile vs. continuous receptor-stimulation research
- Pituitary gonadotroph desensitization kinetics
