Overview
ARA-290 is a synthetic peptide derived from the helix-B surface region of erythropoietin, engineered to retain EPO’s tissue-protective signaling while eliminating its hematopoietic (red-blood-cell-stimulating) activity.
Mechanism & Research Findings
ARA-290 selectively activates the innate repair receptor (IRR), a heteromeric complex of the EPO receptor and CD131, rather than the classical homodimeric EPO receptor responsible for erythropoiesis. This selectivity allows researchers to study EPO’s cytoprotective and anti-inflammatory signaling — including effects on small-fiber nerve regeneration and neuropathic pain models — entirely independent of confounding changes in red-blood-cell production, making ARA-290 a valuable tool for dissecting EPO’s pleiotropic receptor biology.
Research Applications
- Innate repair receptor (IRR) / CD131 signaling research
- Neuropathic pain and small-fiber nerve regeneration models
- EPO-pathway selectivity research (cytoprotection vs. erythropoiesis)
